Social Media Sites for Kids?

Disney just announced it acquired Togetherville, a social network designed for kids.  In addition to connecting with friends, users can play games and watch videos. The site is the forerunner of a new trend of kid-friendly social media sites, including Skid-e Kids, What’s What? and ScuttlePad. The benefit of these sites is that they allow parents to interact with their children online in a safe, controlled environment.  What they also offer is a parent-approved method for kids to interact with the brands they love.  For example, social network giantHello enables kids to become fans of their favorite brands, including celebrities, video games and toys.  Click below to read more.

If your brand serves kids, this is a perfect way to target them directly. Angry Birds, the hottest game on iOS and quickly spreading to all major entertainment consoles, uses their profiles on kid social networks to announce new products and updates, and in return it’s fans comment and discuss the brand, just like on Facebook or Twitter. Consider it prep for when they turn 13 and have access to the major players, if their parents allow them.  If your marketing plan includes creating playground hype or even the “Mommy I want it” effect, consider adding these sites to your social media strategy.
